Our best wishes for 2014!
First, for being a loyal fan. We do this for you, first and foremost.
Second, for supporting us through thick and thin and making Heroes of the North something we enjoy doing!
There is not really enough we could do to thank you all, but this upcoming year we plan to give back!
We did not release as much as we wanted this year. We had to reorganize, reconsider, plan differently. But we are now ready for production and we think that the ride will be worth the wait!
So once again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you! Here's to a better year!
The Heroes of the North Team
Production on Season 2 is underway. A big change for the second season will be the use of considerably more CGI, including virtual sets and props. Things are progressing quite a bit on this front, with several set pieces already done ahead of the actual live action shooting that will take place in April and May 2014. Here is a sneak peak of the work in progress for the landing pad of the Medusa Arctic base that will be feature prominently in Episode 2. Who says landing pad automatically says flying vehicle to land on it! So here is a rough sketch for a Medusa VTOL type of vehicle… Both elements are being handled by ZED VFX.
The 7th Matrix has released their choice for their 20 best webseries of 2013 and Heroes of the North scored a nifty number 2! Alongside a glowing review, here is what they had to say about the show:
What if the characters in a superhero comic book literally came to life?
They would probably look a lot like the costumed adventurers that populate the universe of Heroes Of The North, an ambitious transmedia project that includes novels, comic books - and the crown jewel - a dynamic, action-packed web series.
Produced and set in Canada, the web series follows a group of superheroes charged by the government to keep the peace, and protect the nation from threats to security both foreign as well as domestic.
Every aspect of this project features production value that looks as if millions of dollars were attributed to the budget.
The far more impressive reality is Heroes Of The North is independently produced and financed.
This is a powerful testament to the talent, passion, and dedication of the producers, writers, cast and crew.
The plotting is another hallmark, as the ancillary media adds greater depth and complexity to the main storyline. This makes for a truly immersive entertainment experience.
If you love action, intrigue, superheroes and comic books, you will find much to love in Heroes Of The North.
As we are already hard at work on Season 2, with the first episode Jackpot: Royal Flush soon to head into sound mixing, we hope that our fans and supporters will appreciate even more the second season of the series. We are committed to pushing the limits, so here is hoping we make the list again in 2014!
For those who are still wondering - it apparently was not clear at the end of the teaser because of the Grindhouse style titles - the second Season will begin on January 30, 2014 with the Jackpot: Royal Flush episode.
Here is the synopsis:
Jackie Pothier just lost everything. Her pride and joy, her martial arts school, has been foreclosed, thanks to her self-centered gambling boyfriend, William Carter.
Trying to regain what he lost, William plays against Irish mob leader Ray O’Flynn. Things do not go as planned and Ray shows up at Jackie’s to collect his due. Things degenerate quickly and Jackie finds a new strength and a dark side of herself as she tries to survive this night of violence, pain and murder...
This episode will be followed by:
WILD ROSE: TRIAL AND TRIBULATIONS (February 28, 2014)
MANTIS: A WING AND A PRAYER (March 30, 2014)
SASKANA: SEED OF WRATH (April 30, 2014)
BOREALIS: CROSSING OVER (May 30, 2014)
The Heroes of the North wishes our fantastic cast and crew, artists, collaborators, friends, fans and supporters happy holidays and the very best for 2014!
We just completed shooting for the first of five Origins minisodes. This one stars Dominique Arganese as Jackpot, a former martial arts instructor pushed to the dark side by sinister events.
It is not because we have not yet released Legacies that we are not working on the second volume of 2014, NEW BEGINNINGS! We have already started making stories for the second trade of 2014, which will feature mainly stories presenting our brand new superheroes and villains of Season 2, such as Saskana above, illustrated by Andre St-Amour. We cannot wait for you guys to discover what we have in store for you all in 2014!
As some of you may know, we have licensed some of our characters to SMcG Customs and Flirty Girl Collectibles for the fabrication of 12 inches, highly detailed collectible figurines. As far as we can tell, we are the first web series ever to have this honour. These very cool folks are currently hard at work on the Crimson and Hornet figurines which should see the light of day in early 2014. Here is a neat sneak peek at the work-in-progress for the Crimson boots. We cannot wait to see the final product. Can you?
Christopher Yao knocks another one out of the park with his stunning costume design of Terra Nova, protector of Newfoundland!
Nordik might be dead but that will not stop us from exploring parts of past. Expect several Nordik stories in our upcoming trade paperback, LEGACIES. The sample art above by Geof Isherwood comes from a tale called Generations, which follows Nordik’s lineage, all the way from her grandmother to today, with a truckload of mind boggling revelations along the way! This trade paperback will serve as a bridge between Season 1 and 2, with several stories setting the stage for things to come! A must get for all Heroes of the North fans!
Prep is well underway for shooting the first Origins minisode next week - JACKPOT: Royal Flush, written by Michel Brouillette. Auditions on Monday. Props pick up on Tuesday, Fight training, costume fitting and photoshoot on Wednesday, second unit shooting on Thursday and All out brawling on Friday! Busy week ahead! It will be also the time to fulfill several of the shooting related IndieGogo perks.
Here is a sketch for an upcoming Black Terror illustration by Donald Caron. This illustration will also be part of an upcoming book we plan on releasing in the Spring of 2014 called Heroes of the North: The Art of Donald Caron.
We love Montrealer Bernie Mireault’s work (creator of The Jam) here at HOTN Central and we are proud to say that he is contributing a story in his inimitable style for the upcoming Legacies Trade Paperback.
Here is a sneak peak from the 8 pages story featuring 8 Ball and Black Terror in a quite awkward moment… These little slices of life that Bernie captures so perfectly are what make his stories so intensely appealing.
We start shooting a first batch of Origins Episodes next week. That was not the original plan - we had to switch everything around due to a series of unfortunate circumstances that made several actors unavailable for a long period. And then winter came... So we will be shooting Season 2 in the spring instead, which is good because we have several scenes set in the spring!
However, that does not mean you will have to wait that long for your fix of HOTN episodes! We will shoot a series of 5 Origins minisodes (around 10 minutes each) which we will premiere starting at the end of January, releasing one a month until May. By then, Season 2 will have been shot and we will be releasing a 20 minutes episode every month from June until March 2014.
The first episode to go under the camera will be a spectacular Jackpot origins episode called Royal Flush, possibly one of the best episode of the series so far, written by Michel Brouillette. It will be up at the end of January.
Here is another costume design, this time for Nano, Toronto’s hero. Canada’s biggest city gets a hero who can become really, really small - but you know what they say: good things come in small packages!
A short teaser for Nano can be viewed on YouTube. You can also get some more information on this character and other upcoming Season 2 characters by visiting this page.
Don’t forget to like (if you do!), share or comment! All constructive feedbacks are always welcome!
Here is the latest character design by Christopher Yao, this time it is Yukon Jack.
A big, heartfelt THANK YOU to all our fans and friends who came by to say hello at our booth at the Ottawa Pop Expo 2013!
Designed by Christopher Yao, this handsome fella is the North West Territories superhero known as Yellow Knife!
